UNM Hospitals Eye Clinic

Design Plus and its team provided a feasibility study to expand the existing Eye Clinic into an adjacent vacant office space located at 1600 University Blvd NE, and subsequently provided full Architectural and Engineering design services to complete the renovation and addition project. 

Project highlights include:

  • Extensive and efficient space planning for fit an extensive program:

               - 6 exam rooms
               - Procedure room
               - Secondary patient waiting area
               - Provider and Optometrist offices
               - Clinic Manager, Supervisor, and Scheduler offices
               - New Tech and Nurses’ stations
               - Medical storage and other support spaces

  • Alleviated congestion at the Front Check-In by using creative casework and furniture solutions 
  • Assisted UNMH and end-users with selection and coordination of furniture and equipment
  • Alleviated extremely loud traffic noise and vibration issues from being in close proximity to University Bl


Design Plus was contracted in April of 2013 to provide A/E Services on this extremely fast track project involving renovation of 18,600 sq ft of an existing two story office building into a clinical facility for UNMH ASAP, including a methadone dispensing pharmacy.

Design Plus worked with the building owner and general contractor to value engineer the project to meet UNMH budget restrictions without sacrificing quality or functionality.

Due to the severe schedule limitation(10 weeks for design and approval phase and 12 weeks for construction phase) we conducted twice-weekly programming and design charrettes with end-users. Due to our clear understanding of various regulatory requirements, we were able to develop a design solution to meet program and end user goals very quickly. While developing programming and schematic design, we performed a thorough assessment of existing conditions and code analysis. This allowed our team to prepare construction documents in 4 weeks. 

Bernalillo Academy Residential Treatment Center

This property at 1801 Randolph SE is a 83,500 sq. ft. three-story building which is part of a larger campus of approximately 22.6 acres with four buildings constructed in various phases between 1980 and 1988. Most of these buildings were used for offices and information technology-type functions. 

The improvements to accommodate the relocation of the Bernalillo Academy at this site included interior renovation of approximately 80% of the spaces on all floors and upgrades to building HVAC, electrical and fire protection systems along with other ADA improvements. The sitework included converting a majority of the existing parking lot south of the building into several age-appropriate and activity level separated fenced play areas for the children.

Bernalillo Academy is the only organization and facility of its kind in both the City of Albuquerque and the State of New Mexico that provides sub-acute residential treatment to children ages 4 through 18 who have severe Emotional, Disorders (ED), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Developmental Delays (DD), neurobehavioral disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, and trauma induced conditions.
