APS Jackson Middle School

Albuquerque, NM

The new classroom block at Jackson Middle school is a two-story consisting of 28 classrooms. Some classrooms are specialty teaching rooms, such as Fine Arts, Steam Lab, and Physical Therapy. To bring color into the building, we utilized different colors as a means of wayfinding within the 55,000 SF building. Classroom alcove entrances are all different colors that help break the monotony of a blank hallway. In the middle of the building is a two-story high tile mosaic of Jackson’s mascot - the Jaguar.

Jackson is a LEED v4 Gold certified building - the second school project in New Mexico to reach this milestone. Through the projects design and on site energy generation, this project is anticipated to conserve over 350,000 kWh per year as compared to standard design options. This is the equivalent of over 44 homes’ electricity use for one year.

One design aspect to meet this certification was to design a large brise-soleil along the westside of the classroom block to shade from the harsh desert sun.

The project also included site work, widening the bus lane, and demolition of the existing administration building.
