X-Ray Associates of New Mexico (XRANM) has been a Design Plus client for almost thirty years. Due to the growth of their breast imaging and clinic facilities, XRANM combined the facilities to create a one stop shop for breast health. This 35,000 square foot clinic houses mammograms – both screening and diagnostic – ultrasounds, MRI and CT machines, and other technologies dedicated to breast health. Design Plus helped in the coordination of XRANM’s own vendors, such as the furniture and the diagnostic equipment to create a cohesive biophilic design within the shell of the building.

The concept for the Breast Health and Imaging Center is based on a biophilic design approach, which has been proven to relieve anxiety and reduce stress for patients, aid in the healing process, lower noise levels, and increase productivity for staff. The goal of the project was to connect the built environment with the New Mexico landscape. Throughout the clinic, patients and staff are immersed in natural tones and elements connecting to nature, such as patterns and textures, daylighting, views of the Sandia Mountains, and natural materials. We collaborated with local artists using photographs of the Bosque that we printed on a resin backlit panel in the MRI hallway, as well as had a local felt artist, Molly Zimmer, create a mural of the Bosque out of felt. This feature felt panel mural brings the quintessential flora and fauna of the middle Rio Grande Bosque into the diagnostic waiting area.
