The Monterey Motel made its mark on the Mother Road beginning in 1937. It is one of the rare Route 66 auto courts which has been in continuous operation since it opened doors to road weary travelers over 70 years ago. The motel’s long-time owner, Norman Bugg, saw the promise of Route 66 and provided travelers local hospitality along their journey down the “road to opportunity.”

In contrast to many Route 66 auto courts which utilized a kitschy western aesthetic, Monterey Motel chose a more progressive route, employing a modern approach to draw customers in. The use of exposed blank facades, structural columns, square framed windows and minimal, undecorated overhangs all expressed cutting edge ideals of Modernist architecture at the time. In the state of its initial construction, the Monterey served as a harbinger for the wave of modernist architecture that would later hit Albuquerque in the following decades.

In 2020, Design Plus renovated the Monterey Motel (MOMO) as part of an ongoing effort to revitalize historic Route 66 gems along west Central Ave in Albuquerque. In collaboration with Design Plus architects, current owner Chad Rennaker restored the MOMO to the original 1937 appearance. The pitched roof and brick façade were removed and the band detail was rebuilt. The doors and windows were replaced with wood and steel sash historic replicas respectively. The Monterey Motel neon sign was also painted and restored to its original appearance.

In addition to the motel renovation, Design Plus completed an addition that includes “StayAts,” an innovative new type of hotel accommodation intended to create a communal environment for large groups, families, and road-trippers.

The property also includes a new pool and the MOMO Lounge, a vintage-inspired distillery that serves craft cocktails.
